Lenfilm — Chapter 1

Client / project

Lenfilm

Format

Projection film

Duration

3 min 17 sec

The first chapter of Lenfilm’s projection film follows historical St Petersburg through to the film studio. Every scene was composed for the screen’s arched mask.

Brief

Introduce Lenfilm’s story, moving from historical St Petersburg to the film studio. The piece was made for an arched projection surface rather than a conventional rectangular screen.

Approach

We built the city, architecture and studio scenes as a continuous sequence. Camera moves, subject scale and key details were checked against the arch mask so the story remained legible on the large projection.

Outcome

The published cut runs for 3 minutes 17 seconds. Long camera moves connect the city with the emergence of Lenfilm.

The projection surface shaped the film

The main subject, camera path and transitions were checked in the actual display format; a standard widescreen composition would have lost key details at the edges.
